The bedroom is often a place where children retreat, to play games such as bouncing on beds, fighting games which they may not allowed to play elsewhere.
With the knowledge that children may engage in boisterous activities in the bedroom, more attention should be given and special safety precautions should be in consideration.
Hazards in children's bedroom:
- Concealment of children and their activities
Recommendations:
Put your baby to sleep on her back or side. Putting her to sleep on her front may exposed her to the risk of suffocation.
- If a crib is used, make sure that the mattress is firm and flat. Avoid using soft bedding underneath the baby.
- Baby's crib should be firm and sturdy with no loose or missing hardware. It shouldn't be placed near window blind or curtain cords as this may lead to strangulation. Cribs should also be away from windows to prevent falls.
- Rounding all edges to avoid children hurting themselves when playing, minimizing the need for bunk beds to reduce the number of falls from beds, and removing curtain cords hanging within children's reach
- Ensure correct placement of fire alarms.
- Ensure sufficient space in between bed if more than one bed are used
Provide each bed space with a light switch within easy reach of the bed and within children's reach.
- Ensure all external corners below 900 mm (on to which a child may fall ) are not sharp ( edges should be rounded)
- Provide adequate play space
- Provide storage space for play items which is stable to prevent tipping onto children
- Install door jam protectors
- Ensure that unused power outlets / electric sockets are covered by push-in plugs.
- Securely attach wall units/bookcases to the wall, to prevent children from tipping the fixture over
